4th trimester: Road Trip Part 1

We embarked on our road trip a few days ago. It is the start of day 4 and we are mostly well rested. Lucy is adapting to life on the road, although late bedtimes are not equating to late wake-ups. The sleep deficit results in some emotional moments. Such is life with a 2 year old. Stella quickly got into a rhythm, the high point of which is the ability to graze. Mealtimes are the shackles of home life. On the road, we eat when we please, and for the most part what we please.

We opened the trip with two days on Madeline Island/Bayfield. The island is an interesting place. At first we weren’t quite sure what we thought of it, but after a day, we came to appreciate its charms – laid back, a little quirky, with a diverse population. The 20-minute ferry ride makes it seem a world away from Bayfield.

Yesterday we departed for Lake Gogebic in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. On the way we tried our hand at geo-caching. If you haven’t heard of it, look it up online. The quick explanation is that it is a giant GPS enabled treasure hunt. We were successful in finding our first “cache” despite the fact that it was guarded by a snake. We took a plastic ring and left a golf tee.

Today we are off to Baraga State Forest on Lake Superior near L’Anse. We might check out Henry Fords old sawmill on the way – I am sure the girls will love it!
